Buford Herbert Bjorklund died on 12 May 2011, at Thursday, prob. Minneapolis, Hennepin, MN. BJORKLUND, BUFORD HERBERT – BJ died May 12, 2011 – was born at home on November 3, 1917, in Morningside, Minnesota – a suburb of Minneapolis. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Jean Schilling. BJ and Jean both attended First Baptist Church in downtown Minneapolis and West High School where they re-met at their 55th high school reunion. Both were widowed so after a whirlwind courtship they married in 1993.
BJ lost his first wife, Ruth Rogers Bjorklund, after 46 years of marriage. They had two children – Buff and Ann. BJ worked for 55 years as a manufacturer’s representative for large electrical equipment and remembers every joke he ever told. He and Ruth raised their family in Houston, El Paso and San Antonio, Texas. BJ was a 1939 graduate of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, and still could sing the school spirit song called Um Yaya.

Second only to his love of the Lord was his love of country. Serving in World War II was a defining chapter in his life. He was a Major with the Army’s 96th Infantry Division and made the original landing in Leyte, Philippines. The division earned the Presidential Citation for Extraordinary Heroism.

He was an active member of the Gideon’s and supported many Christian organizations throughout his 93 years. In 1988, BJ decided to pursue his love of cooking by attending a summer course in Sweden where he practiced his Swedish along with his culinary skills.
BJ is preceded in death by his first wife Ruth and their son, Buff. He is survived by his wife, Jean Schilling, his daughter Ann and her husband Gene Rebholz of Peoria, Illinois, and their children, Colonel Alan Rebholz, wife Mary and family, Michael Rebholz and family, Karen Rebholz and family, and his son Buff’s wife, Mary, and their family. He has 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by Jean’s family as well who enjoyed him in his later years and came to appreciate his ever present sense of humor, his love of God, his positive outlook, willing spirit and ever ready smile.

Memorials: Special thanks go to the staff and caregivers at the former Brighton Gardens and the Sutter Hospice personnel for their special attention and care.
