Sophia French After the death of her father, Sophia French worked as a domestic in the town of Elora. It is most likely that she met her future husband, John Moore during this tenure.
As a person, the family denotes the following characteristics of Sophie. She was devoutly religious, frugal, cheerful and dedicated to the welfare of the poor. This was a result of the conditions in which she was raised. Her future husband and his brother had done some prospecting in British Columbia. Upon his return to Ontario, they were married in 1869. No record of the marriage has surfaced, but it is speculated to have occurred in March, because that would have allowed John time to travel back while the roads and railway were passable. In the tax assessments for late March of that same year, the number of individuals in the John Moore household is listed as two. At the time of marriage, John was 32 and Sophie was not quite 21. The marriage was probably officiated in the Elora Wesleyan church, but unfortunately the minister did not send in the 1869 records to the county courthouse, and all Elora Methodist records were destroyed in 1910.
