James "Sr" Cowlthorp THE COWLTHORP FAMILY

     James Sr. Cowlthorp was born about 1778 in England and joined the British army in Sheffield, England in 1797. He served with the 76th Regiment of Foot in Spain, Ireland, the Jersey Channel Islands, Canada and was stationed in several places in England. The following is an account of the 76th Regiment of Foot from 1814 until the time of James' discharge in 1821.

     "76th Regiment of Foot”, 2nd Battalion Duke of Wellington's West Riding* -Canada 1814-1827: arrived Canada 1814 Chambly, Plattsburg, wintered at St. Antoine and St. Denis. May 1815 to Isle aux Noix, 2 companies at St. Johns, P.Q. August 1816 to Quebec, 1818 to Fort Henry, Kingston on to Quebec 1819. May 1821 to Kingston.

     James Sr. Cowlthorp served in Canada from 1814 until his discharge as a sergeant on 24 May 1821. According to the Quebec Gazette of 25 June 1821, he was granted a pension of Is7d per diem on 21 June 1821. This seems a small pension but it was the highest of the nineteen pensioners listed.

     James Sr. Cowlthorp was on the 1823 and 1824 censuses for Augusta Twp. , Grenville Co., Upper Canada. He later lived near Kemptville. One daughter, Susanna, was baptized in Augusta Twp. in 1823; but after Mary Ann and Isaac were baptized in Kemptville in 1829 he apparently settled there.

     No marriage record has been found for James Sr. and his wife Ellen (Eleanor) but Census Records indicated that she was born in either Canada or U.S.A. No record has been found for the birth of their eldest son Richard but one Census Record gives his birthplace as Lower Canada. The following are the baptism records which have been located for James Cowlthorp's children:

"James Jr., son of James & Eleanor Coulthorp was baptized on the twenty-seventh day of August in the year of our Lord, 1820, (Brockville Register). Susanna, Bapt. 19 Jan. 1823, B. 20 Oct. 1822, dau. of James & Elizabeth Cow-thorp, Augusta, (Augusta Register).

Isaac, Bapt. 25 Oct. 1829, B. 20 Oct. 1824, son of James & Ellen Cowlthorpe, Oxford, yeoman, (Kemptville Register) .

Mary, Bapt. 25 Oct. 1829, B. 25 Feb. 1829, dau. of James & Ellen Cowlthorpe, Oxford, yeoman, (Kemptville Register).

Samuel, Bapt. 23 Nov. 1832, B. 13 May 1832, son of James & Ellen Cowlthorpe, Oxford, yeoman, (Kemptville Register)."

     In 1835 James Sr. was registered as owner of part of Lot 22, Cone. 3, Oxford Twp., Grenville Co., which he held until his death in 1846. The land abstract for Oxford Twp. was listed under James from 1835-1844, then under James Jr. and then Richard, designated "E. son 5 heir-at-law", who sold it in 1849. The census record of 1824 does not tell anything about the farm, but in 1848, when James Jr. was the proprietor there, the following products were listed: 54 pounds of wool; 12 yards of fulled cloth and 22 yards of flannel and other cloth; 300 pounds of maple sugar; and 60 pounds of butter for market.

     For his 231/2 years of service in the 76th Regiment of Foot and others, James Sr., as a discharged sergeant, was granted 200 acres of land, Lot 12, Cone. Ottawa Front, in Gloucester Twp. , Carleton Co. , Upper Canada on 26 Aug. 1839 and received the patent on 4 July 1841. He sold it on 28 Jan. 1842 to John Hobson for 50 pounds.

*It is possible that James Sr. was born in Yorkshire as this is where you find the West Riding.

     James Sr. Cowlthorp died 8 May 1846 at the age of 68 years and was buried 10 May 1846 in the St. James' Church Yard in Kemptville, Canada West. His widow, Ellen, was listed on the 1851 census of S. Cayuga Twp., Haldimand Co., C.W., as Ellen Colthorp, B. U.S., Episcopal Methodist, aged 63 yrs., widow.

     Ellen was still living in S. Cayuga Twp., Haldimand Co. on the 1861 census. She was listed aged 72 yrs., widow E. Meth., B. U.S.

     Ellen Cowlthorp died about 1862. Her tombstone is located in Steen Cemetery Junc. Rds. 50 & 20 in S. Cayuga Twp., Haldimand Co., Ontario.

     Richard, the eldest son, born 25 May 1815 (Lower Canada) married Helen Glenn 24 March 1840 at Prescott, Upper Canada.

     The places of baptism of four of Richard and Helen Cowlthorp's children, as listed in the Augusta Register of the Anglican Church, give an indication of where they were living during those years.

"Baptism of Margaret, d. of Richard and Helen Couthorpe - Edwardsburg, farmer, born 5 Nov. 1840, bapt. 28 Feb. 1841.

Baptism of James, son of Richard & Helen (sic) Cowlthorpe of Edwardsburg. Born Nov. 1, 1842, bapt. Feb. 5, 1843.

Baptism of Mary Thompson, d. of Richard & Helen (sic) Cowlthorpe, Edwardsburg, farmer (sic), born 29 Dec. 1844, bapt. Jan. 25, 1846.

Baptism of William Glen, son of Richard & Helen (sic) Cowlthorpe, farmer of Oxford. Born Aug. 14, 1848, bapt. Dec. 31, 1848."

     Richard and Helen "Colthorpe" were listed on the 1851 census in Edwardsburg Twp., South Grenville Co., Canada West with five children, Margaret, James, Mary, William and Jane. Richard was listed as a farmer. Their religion was listed as "Free Church". On the 1861 census Richard and "Elenor" and seven children, 1) Margaret, 2) James, 3) Mary, 4) Andrew, 5) Wm. J., 6) Jane and
7) Richard (it is believed that this child Richard is the same as Matthew) were still in Edwardsburg Twp. Their religion was listed as "Ch. of Scotland". In the late '60's the family moved to Minnesota, U.S.A.

     James Cowlthorp, Jr. was born in Augusta Twp., Leeds and Grenville Co., Upper Canada in 1820. He lived on his father's farm and carried on there after his father d in 1846. This farm was located on Lot 22, Concession 3, Oxford Twp. near today's Kemptville, Ontario.

     James married Jemima Hickmott in St. James Anglican Church in Kemptville on 19 Oct. 1840. Since the children of this marriage were subsequently baptized in the Wesleyan Methodist faith, apparently he changed his religious affiliation shortly after his wedding, if not before. Baptism records have been located for only four of James Jr. Cowlthorp's children; they are as follows:

     Elias Elisha, son of James S Sarah Colthorpe of Gosfield, B. 25 Oct. 1855 Gosfield, bapt. 23 Mar. 1856 Gosfield."

     Jemima Cowlthorp died with infant John Wesley in childbirth about 1851.

James Jr. Cowlthorp was listed on the 1848 census in Oxford Twp., Grenville Co., Canada West. In 1850, James Jr. moved with his family to a farm at Olinda, Gosfield Twp., Essex Co., Canada West.

Susannah born 20 Oct. 1822, married Daniel C. Raven of Antwerp, N.Y. on 8 Feb. 1836 at Kemptville and subsequently moved to New York State.

Isaac, born 20 Oct. 1824 at Kemptville and died there 3 Aug. 1839 and is buried in St. James Church Yard.

Mary Ann, born 25 Feb. 1829 at Kemptville, married Jacob Fry of Cayuga Twp.

Samuel died as an infant and was buried in St. James Church Yard, Kemptville.
