Robert Eli Johnson was born on 21 October 1952, at Fort Frances, Ont., Can.. He was the son of James Arthur Johnson and Lucille "Dolly" Calder.
Robert Eli Johnson died on 19 May 2011, at At sunrise, , . Bob (Robert) Johnson of Thunder Bay, Ontario died at sunrise on May 19, 2011.
He was born on October 21, 1952 to James and Lucille (Dolly) Johnson in Fort Frances, Ontario. Early in his childhood the Johnson family moved to Atikokan. Growing up, Bob excelled as a baseball player, snowmobile racer and loved spending time with his many friends and family. As a young man he began working with his father in the forestry industry in the Atikokan area - later on, the two created J&R Johnson Trucking Ltd. which he continued to run until his illness.
In 1978, Bob married Alicia (Krienke) were they began their lives together in Thunder Bay. They have two children together – Chantelle (Spuzak) and Chad. Bob loved to spend time with his family – he always loved to tell stories about the good times – and joke about the bad. His sister Joanne (Jewett) and brother in-law (Terry) were always constant characters in his stories – he especially got a thrill telling stories that made his mother roll her eyes and say “oh Bobby”.
One of the greatest enjoyments for Bob was becoming a grandfather. Nathan and Angelina loved to spend time with their grandfather – going for a “candy run”, continuous playtime – they both brought so much laughter and happiness to his life.
Bob also loved to spend time with his friends – mainly on the golf course; rain or shine Bob would always wanted to play another 18-holes. Bob participated in many golf tournaments (every weekend). Some of his achievements included a hole-in-one, longest-drive, and many top finishes. Curling was another sport Bob loved to play – for nearly 23 years Bob, Alicia, Jim (Hammy) and Tannis played mixed curling – many fun times were had on and off the ice. Most of the memories were made sitting around the table after a game – Bob would find a way to tease the person that missed their shot – he always joked that Tannis and Alicia could only sweep hard in the kitchen. Jim always tried his very best! Although Bob continually joked around, he was the first to tell someone what a great shot they made (in golf or curling).
Bob was very well known in the trucking community – he was always the first to give a helping hand to his fellow truckers. His greatest contribution was his sense of humour – using his CB radio he shared songs he made-up “Let’s all go down the Boreal Road” – this song was such a “hit” that his co-workers made a t-shirt with a picture of his truck and the song title.
He is survived by his wife Alicia, daughter Chantelle (Mike), son Chad and canine companion Dr. Pepper. Grandchildren Nathan and Angelina. Mother Lucille (Dolly) Johnson, sister Joanne (Terry), nephew Scott (Wendy), nieces Tara (Paul) and Hilary (Jim). Mother-in-law Betty-mae Krienke, sister-in-law Nadyne (John) nephew Kevin and niece Lysa, brother-in-law Kevin (Marion) and sister-in-law Darlyss (Scott).
He was preceded in death by his father James Johnson.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Bob’s life will take place on Tuesday May 24, 2011 at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Rosslyn Village at 1:00 p.m. Following the celebration a luncheon will be held at Rosslyn Village Community Centre at 2:30 p.m.
If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Regional Cancer Centre – TBRHSC or St. Joseph’s Care Group – Hospice Unit in Bob’s memory would be greatly appreciated by the family.
The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. G. Davis, Ursala, and Karen for their care, kindness and compassion throughout his illness.1
