William J. Deeley, Railway Pioneer Dies in North Bay
William James Deeley, 84, one of the last survivors of North Bay's earliest pioneer era, died this
morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. Turner, 643 Main Street west. He had been in failing health
for the past year.
One of North Bay's first railroaders, Mr. Deeley came to the city "with the steel" back in 1884, when the
Canadian Pacific Railway was first thrusting its rails through the muskeg and wilderness of Northern Ontario. He started as a fireman on the early wood-burning locomotives and "fired" the first engine which pushed across the newly-constructed rails to Sault Ste. Marie. He was believed to be the last of the small group of railroaders who pioneered the steel in the North during the early 1880's.
Although he worked as a fireman and engineer most of his life, Mr. Deeley took several years off from the railway to act as engineer in charge of the North Bay pumping station when it was first moved from the city to its present site at Trout Lake.
He was born in Staffordshire, England and came to Canada as a youth. The building of the Canadian Pacific Railway offered a new and adventurous life to the young man of that day and he came to North Bay with the vanguard pushing the rails into Northern Ontario in 1884. He decided to remain here and was married 58 years ago to the former Jennie Langstaff, who predeceased him.
He is survived by three sons, Frank, Ottawa; William, North Cobalt; Alfred, Kennabek, Ont., and four daughters, Mrs. R.D. Cowdry, Chicago, Ill; Mrs. S. Booth, Widdifield; Mrs. R. Haslett, Toronto and Mrs. A. Turner, North Bay.
Funeral services for Mr. Deeley will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Tennant Funeral Home, where the body is resting. Rev. W.W. Jarvis will conduct the service.1

Elisha Edward "Edmund" Langstaff I am trying to help a friend, maiden name Barbara Langstaff, find her roots. Her father was Edmund Elisha Langstaff, b Ontario, Canada on
7-10-1894, d in Los Angeles, Ca on Nov 4, 1946. His father was Edmund Langstaff who married a Miss Hadyes in Auckland in 1886. I think that would be Bishop

Auckland. Barbara's mother was Kate Salina Saunders who was b in England on Feb 14, 1901 and d in Los Angeles on March 23, 1942. Barbara was in her teens when her parents died and she has no knowledge of their ancestors, Do you know any information on them.
Are they connected to your Langstaffs?

thanks

Hi Jack: Thanks for getting back to me. I'll start at the beginning of the info I have.
On the Social Security Death Index, it shows Barbara's father, Edmund Elisha Langstaff with the birthdate of 7-10-1894, which is certainly close enough to the date you have. His birthplace is listed as Canada and Barbara had told me Ontario. It shows his mother's maiden name as Hadyes, and his father's surname as Langstaff. Barbara told me the family moved to Los Angeles in 1920. I don't know if he was married to Kate Salina Saunders in Canada, but she was born in England 2-14-1901, and d in LA 3-23-1942.
I'm not sure where I got the idea Edmund's father was Edmund, but I could have seen it someplace, anyway I look up the England and Wales Civil Registration and got an Edmund who was married in Auckland in 1886, but I couldn't get into the ancestry.com English records as I haven't bought into that.
It says the marriage is recorded in volume 10a, page 254. and I have since found in Parish and Probate records an Edmund in Nottinghamshire, England, which of course I can't get into either. I have been in correspondance with Carole Johnson who has looked into
the book and can't come up with Edmund, nor Hadyes.
Because Barbara was a teen ager when her parents died, she doesn't have any info. In fact, she moved to St. Helens, Oregon where we both were in school in 1944-45 (or before) to live with an aunt whose married name was Jennings.
Her father hadn't passed away yet at that time, but she spoke of some half-brother named George Dewey Smith who were put in an orphanage in 1941 or 1942, in California. I found a George Dewey Smith who was b in California on 8-31-1926, d 7-25-1953 in California but his mother's maiden name is listed as Shanave. I need to ask Barbara a little more about the half-brother.
I would love to exchange whatever I can find. I'm not sure about a gedcom, and I have so little, and have given you what I know, but I
would sure like to receive what you have or what you might find with a few more clues.
