William Russell

M, b. 1782, d. 1832

William Russell was born in 1782, at Charleville, Co., Cork.
William Russell married (?) Anne circa 1806, at, Cork, , Ireland.1
William Russell was Gate keeper for the estate of William, the second Marquis of Thomond, who d. 1846; succeeded to the title on the death of his uncle, Murrough, in February, 1808; married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Trotter, Esq., of Duleek, by whom he had four daughters.
See copy of his refernce in exhibits. between 1813 and 1825, at, Cork, .2 He immigrated in 1825 to, ; In May of 1825, nine ships set sail from Cork Harbour laden with 2024 emigrants, 385 were men, 325 women, 726 male children under 21, and 588 female children under 21, or 710 adults and 1314 children under 21 years of age.

Families arriving on the ship Star, left Cork, Ire. on May 13th, 1825: with 214 settlers:
RUSSELL, William settled in Emily Twp., Victoria County.
RUSSELL, William 43, wife Anne 38 and children: Hester 18, Cornelius 15, Anne 11, Sarah 8, Jane 6, William 2, and
David born 15 Aug 1825, Cobourg
Origin: Charleville, Cork
Location: W lot 18, con 7, Emily Twp

The group did not arrive at Scott's Plains, the present site of Peterborough, until the fall of 1825.
Once at Scott's Plains, the emigrants were given their allotment of 100 acres for each head of family and each male child over eighteen years of age. The families were divided by townships as follows: Emily 142, Ennismore 67, Douro 60, Otonabee 51, Asphodel 36, Smith 34, Ops 7, and Marmora 6, with a few families going relatives from the first Robinson emigration of 1823.

The area from which the Peter Robinson settlers were chosen was for the most part restricted to the small district from which the emigrants of 1823 had been taken. This district, about 20 miles by 40 miles, is the part of county Cork north of the Blackwater River, containing the towns of Liscarroll, Kanturk, Buttevant, Mallow, Charleville, Doneraile Fermoy, Churchtown, Kilworth, Brigown, and Mitchelstown. About half of the total recommendations and petitions of distressed families were from this district, and the others were from places as widely separated as western Kerry, northern Clare and Tipperary, and eastern Wicklow and Wexford.

The voyage time was half that of the 1823 emigrants, with 31 days being the longest time at sea. Nevertheless, a number of people died during the ocean crossing, and others died soon after their arrival on dry land. The ships docked at Quebec City at the end of June. The newcomers traveled by steamer to Montreal, then overland to Lachine where bateaux were waiting to transport then to Prescott. From there they proceeded to Kingston. At Kingston, the people stayed in a tent village awaiting the arrival of Robinson, who had returned to Canada by another route.

"Peter Robinson's Settlers, 1823-1825" written by Carol Bennett . It was first published by Juniper Books in 1987 and is now in its third printing (as of December 1999).

Charleville: from Cassels 1893 Gazateer:
Market town on the Glynn, Parish of Rathgoggan, N. Co. Cork, Ireland (34 miles N. of Cork). There is a Roman Catholic Chapel, a school, a bridewell and a court-house. Manufacture of leather and line is carried out there, but in a small way. The surrounding country is exceedingly rich and fertile and presents a variety of fine landscapes. Charleville was founded in 1661 by Lord Broghill, afterwards the Earl of Orrey, who built a castle in the neighbourhood, but it was taken and destroyed by the Duke of Brunswick in 1690. The town received its name from Charles II at which time it changed from Rathgoggan to Charleville in honour of the monarch. It continued to return two members down to the Union. Charleville gave the title to the Earl of Charleville, but it is now extinct. Ardsagh, Castle Harrison, Cooline, Fortlands and Saunder Park are seats.

Ballyhay:
Parish, Fermoy, Orrey, and Kilmore bars, N. Co. Cork, 2 miles S.E. of Charleville, 4835 ac.. This is a very productive tract.

Emily was the first of the townships of modern Victoria to be laid out. Mariposa came next, and then Fenelon, Ops and Eldon, in that order. Verulam, Somerville and Bexley were opened up later, and the more northerly townships of Carden, Laxton, Digby, Dalton and Longford much later still. These townships first came under the Newcastle District with headquarters at Cobourg, on Lake Ontario. Then, in 1841, along with some of the inland townships lying to the east, they became the Colborne District, which was reorganized in 1850 as Peterborough County and in 1854 as the "United Counties of Peterborough and Victoria." From 1841 to 1861 municipal authority was centred at Peterborough but in the latter year Victoria was given provisional and in 1863 complete independence.3

William Russell he Peter Robinson transport Star, Captain Becket, would have arrived at Quebec during this period, carrying about 214 settlers, but the arrival was not reported in the Courant. These emigrants took the steam boat "Lady Sherbrooke" from Quebec to Montreal on June 22nd. circa 20 June 1825, at Lady Sherbrooke to Montreal, , .4
William Russell lived in 1826, at Lot 18, cons 7, , ; From the book: Peter Robinson's Settler: 1823 - 1825, author: Carol Bennett.

(?) Anne There was a Mary Russel married to a John Clarke with Wit: Thomas russel and James Davidson on 1 may 1849 in Emily Twp. by James Dick a presb. Minister. These I don't think could be be children of William or John, Ann's other sons.

1826 census has #20 William with 2 males over 16:          William Sr. and Cornelius;
                2 males under 16,          William Jr. and David;
                2 females over 16,     Anne (mother) and Hester;
                3 females under 16      Anne, Sarah and Jane;
          total of 9.
There is a total of 575 people in Emily Twp. Roll #M-7740.

1827 has for William Russle
95 uncultivated, 5 under cultivation, lot 18 west 1/2,
1 males >16:     William;                    Cornelius must have been working
2 males <16:     William Jr. and David;          and living with another family
2 females >16:     Anne (mother) and Hester
3 females <16:     Anne, Sarah and Jane;
total = 8
also 2 milch cows.

1839 census taken before Jan 1840 has only :
1 male > 16: Cornelius, listed as head of household, first daughter born 1841;
1 male < 16: John, David and William would have been 16 or older and must be living and working elsewhere;
3 females < 16, does not seem to have any children in this age bracket.
1 female > 16 Hestter:32, Anne:25, Sarah:22 and Jane:20 as well as Anne (mother), could be any one;
total = 6.

748+88+121+484 = total population.
