Thomas Alfred Longhurst The AW Longhurst home in Oro was the birthplace of Archibald Walter LONGHURST on 8 Jun 1877 and Thomas Alfred LONGHURST born 17 Jan 1879. The parents for these two sons were Archibald Weller? LONGHURST born 15 Aug 1856 in King Township, York*, Ontario and Mary Martha LOOKER born 23 Sep 1853 in Ontario*.
Additional notes from Pauline Young* say Archibald Weller LONGHURST (according to 1901 Census) has business farmer settled 1871 Post Office: Edgar Twp and the 1881 Concession and lot VII, 6 Lot size 100.
Archibald died on 12 May 1922* and Mary Martha died 8 Apr 1936*. At this time (July 2002) there is no further death information.
In a report from Cam LONGHURST, the present owner of the property said this is the original log house, with newer stone facing and some expansion. She also seemed to think that there was a previous owner to AW that may have been there 30,40, 50 years earlier. She said that the farming (AW LONGHURST was listed as a farmer on the birth record of the two sons) would have been cows, with hay and corn as crops. Perhaps pigs.
Two more pictures of the AW LONGHURST land behind the home show what the property looks like today. Although there are areas where farming is going on, there is plenty of forest. The land is rocky in parts and nearby are gravel quarries.
By 1882, the LONGHURST family had moved to Barrie, Simcoe, where AW LONGHURST was listed as a butcher.
