I first saw the light of day on April 20, 1897 in the Province of Galicia, Germany. I was the third child, and the first girl, born to Karl and Barbara Appenheimer. At the tender age of only six weeks, my parents decided to immigrate to Canada. They settled in the Lemberg, Saskatchewan district.

When I became of school age, I was sent to Pheasant Forks (which is now called Duff) where Pastor Birk taught about twenty children in reading, writing and arithmetic. The schoolroom was an addition to the manse and the Reformed Church services were held in schoolroom. My Father wanted us to be instructed in the Lutheran faith. For Confirmation instruction he took us eight miles in Lemberg in a “democrat” or sleigh. I remember once walking home all of the eight miles. I stayed with the family of Pete Ulmer for six months for daily instructions since we were going to move. I was confirmed in 1910 by Pastor Pohlman.

Since my Father was a brother of Mrs. Paul Blaser, he decided to move to Lone Creek District (now called Markinch) where the Blasers were farming. Father bought a section of land about four miles south of Markinch and also built a large house.

At the age of 13, I was hired out to the Blaser Family at $5.00 a month for the whole year. Not once in the whole year did I stay at home overnight, even tho' it was only four miles away. My youngest sister, Emma, was born in 1912 and I had to come home to help my Mother. I even sewed nightgowns and diapers for the new baby. About a year later I went to work for my Mother's brother and his family at about the same wage of $5.00 a month.

Sunday was the only time for entertainment. The young people of the District would come together for fellowship, music, and dances. That is where I first met Matthew Wenhardt. Matt worked for the Blasers, who owned a farm near Markinch. In the meantime, I also worked in Markinch for Dick Day, which made it handy for Matt to come and see me. After a four year courtship, we were married on March 7, 1916.

A little house of two rooms was built for us on the farm. It was more convenient, since the Blasers were tired of packing food and lunches for a whole week. Our furniture was rather primitive: a table, some chairs, a wood-burning stove, a bed, and a corner cupboard with shelves for dishes, etc. Here our first son, Arthur, was born, and that necessitated building on another room. It became our living room and was heated with a box stove. We also had to invest in a couch, because my sister, Minnie, came to live with us so that she could attend school in Markinch.

About a year later, Grandfather Wenhardt died and Matt inherited his Maxwell car. Also we had an opportunity to buy our own farm (2 quarters), about eight miles from town. With the help of some money from my Father and Matt's savings, we paid $45.00 per acre. The seed wheat was bought at $2.50 a bushel. On the first of July we had a hailstorm that ruined the wheat crop. Fortunately after that enough feed grew for our two horses and two cows. I tried to make things easier by selling butter and eggs. A crate of eggs brought about $1.00 and a can of tobacco cost $0.75.

To start with our house had only two rooms, with curtains dividing the bedrooms. Later, as the family grew, we built on a large kitchen and a bedroom. By now we had five children: three boys and two girls…Arthur, Bill, Ernie, Louise, and Doreen.

In the meantime we had better crops and a hired man was necessary. With ready money from the banks we were able to acquire bigger and better machinery.

Then came the time for the boys to go to High School. Arthur took Grade Eleven by correspondence and for his Grade Twelve he stayed with his grandparents in Regina. His board and room was paid with meat and produce from the farm. To make it easier for the other two boys to attend High School and University, we decided to rent a house in Regina. In a twelve-room house I kept boarders for fourteen years. By the end of that time the children were all married and we bought a house.

Matt still kept on farming, driving back and forth from the farm to Regina. Our house had a basement suite which was rented out. And even the main floor was rented out in the winter while Matt and I went travelling to see our children. Doreen had moved to California, Bill to San Diego, and Ernie to New Orleans, which gave us a wonderful chance to escape the harsh winters of the Prairie. Arthur at that time was in Swift Current, and Louise in Toronto.

On the 7^th of March, 1966, we celebrated our 50^th Anniversary in Regina. All the children and grandchildren were present.

In 1967 Matt passed away. I stayed in Regina until 1977. Because two of my sons lived in Saskatoon at that time (Arthur and Ernie), I decided to take up residence in the Sunset Home there. In January of 1977, my first winter at the Home, son Bill died of cancer in California. I flew to his funeral with Art and Ernie.

In September 1977, I danced at the wedding of my only granddaughter, Lorna. Since then there have been several more weddings and additional great-grandchildren. I am very proud of all of them.³

With joy we celebrate the life of Jean and sadly announce her passing, one month past her 93rd birthday. She was the youngest of four children and grew up on a farm at Milestone in southern Saskatchewan. In 1932, she completed Grade 12 and worked diligently at various jobs for six years to finance her university education. Jean graduated from the College of Home Economics at the University of Saskatchewan in 1941 and completed her dietetic internship at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC in 1942. She worked for the Junior Red Cross in Saskatchewan for the remainder of the war years, and was awarded a MBE (Member of the British Empire) for her efforts. She went on to complete an MA in Public Health at the University of Michigan and returned to Saskatchewan as the first provincial nutritionist, a post she held for several years. Jean married Arthur Wenhardt in 1951 and their children Lorna, Wesley and Murray were all born in Swift Current, SK. The family relocated to Saskatoon in 1961.She was predeceased by her husband Arthur in 1988 and Jean moved to Victoria in 2003. Jean's connections to people were vital and her relationships dear. Her first love was family and friends who brought great joy throughout her long and energetic life. Jean had many interests: gardening, camping, travelling the world, genealogy, promoting nutrition, language and lifelong learning. Left to carry on her spirit are her three children: Lorna (Gibson) Victoria, Wesley (Paula) Vancouver, and Murray (Venice) Toronto and her five adored grandchildren: Matthew Pierce of Brisbane, Australia, Daniel Pierce (Alison Baillie) of Vancouver, Robin Pierce (David Spicer) of Auch, France, and Ella Jean and Brynn Helena Wenhardt of Toronto. A memorial service will be held in Saskatoon in July 2008. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice that best represents your memory of Jean.¹
