Arthur Vernon Orr [Moon - PeterJackson.FTW]

Vernon broke his back as a teenager by falling off a wood pile. The accident caused his spine to form into an "S" shape as he got older and caused him considerable pain. In later years he ate aspirin almost as if they were candies. He even smuggled aspirin in his shoes when he was admitted to hospital.

During World War I, Vernon was employed as a driver even with his bad back. He was always very skilled mechanically and that is probably one of the reasons that he was able to enlist given his physical condition.

Vernon moved the family to Fort Lauderdale in Oct of 1923, travelling in one of the first motor homes; a truck that he converted with the help of his father. They took a little over three weeks to get there (clipping in Belleville Intelligencer). Vernon had a cousin that lived in Ogus, near North Miami Beach. They were originally going to California but decided to stay in Florida since Vernon liked the climate. They stayed in Florida until 1932. While in Florida, they returned to Belleville and the Coe Hill area for summer holidays.

Vernon's grandfather, George Orr, had a crown grant at Coe Hill with two lakes on it, and a gold mine. He sold the north side of the road to the Neils. There was a large, abandoned house on it that Vernon used during the summer. There was no furniture in the house so in effect they camped out during the summer.

After returning to Canada, Vernon took in a timber crew and cut all the virgin timber. However, before it could be shipped, the mill and all the timber burned, causing him to lose a fortune.

Vernon also owned land near Marmora and he sent money to his brother Leo to pay the taxes on the land. Unfortunately, Leo found other uses for the money so the land was sold off by the township to pay the taxes.

In Fort Lauderdale, Vernon operated a machine shop. During the great hurricane of 1928? the machine shop was destroyed and flooded. Immediately after the storm, Vernon kept the electricity going at the hospital for three or four days. During this time, his own equipment was destroyed by the damage caused by the salt water. Since he had no insurance, he was ruined.

Vernon was an alcoholic and became a notorious town drunk in Belleville. Marion refused to live with him. After he was severely beaten by other drunks, Jeanne placed him in the Ontario Hospital to dry out. Vernon did so and joined AA. He received his five year pin for sobriety of which he was justifiably proud.

A few weeks before he died, he called his grandson, Peter Jackson, to come to Belleville so he could put his affairs in order. Peter was a cadet at the Royal Military College in Kingston at the time so it was difficult to get away during the week, but he did so. It was a beautiful October day and Vernon seemed to be in good health and high spirits. They went to the Belleville Cemetery where Vernon showed Peter the Moon family plot and stated that he was to be buried there also, with his brother Leo and sister Goldie. They then went to the offices of the Belleville Cemetery Company where Vernon went alone to conduct his business. A few weeks later, Vernon was dead.

He is buried in the family plot at Belleville Cemetery, Area N, section 7, lot 3, North Path.[Langstaff Jul 26 01.FTW]
