In 1861 they are living in a frame 1 1/2 story frame home.

Enumerated in District 14, South part Huntingdon Township, 1851. Age at that time was given as 53 which would make his birth year 1798. In 1871 census he gives his age as 75 which would make his birth year 1796. The birth date shown is calculated from the tombstone data which gives his age in years, months and days.

In 1851 he lived in a single story frame house with his wife and family. His oldest daughter Martha was married with two children but her husband was absent for the census. He was 36 and she was 22.

In 1871 Peter and Hannah with their son Henry are living in Concession 2, Lot 17 of Huntingdon on a 200 acre farm of which 180 acres are improved. They have 5 horses, 3 colts, 22 milch cows and 14 cattle, 2 sheep and 10 swine.

Buried in Moira Cemetery, Huntingdon Township, County Road #8 between Moira and Hwy 37. Plot 9-2 West side. Cause of death was given as a "Fall on Ice" after which he lived for nine days. Death was registered by Mark Morton, his son-in-law.

The Upper Canada Naturalization Records 1828-1850 show a Peter Moon swore an Oath of Allegiance to the Crown on 23 October, 1830. The entry reads "Peter Moon, Ameliasburgh, Farmer, (signature), 23 October, (entry number) 30". Oaths of Allegiance were required for non-British residents in the fear that some former Americans were infiltrating to agitate for union with the U.S. To qualify, one had to be a resident of Upper Canada for at least seven years and to take the oath within three years of qualifying. Those under 16 were to take the oath within three years after their 16th birthday. No further oaths would be taken after 1 Jan 1850. Given the qualifications, all other known Peter Moons in the area can be eliminated; Peter Jr. was born in Upper Canada; the Peter Moon listed in the 1851 Ameliasburgh census was born in 1825 and therefore too young but it may be his father who took the oath.

If it was this Peter Moon that actually took this oath then it suggests that the Moons of Huntingdon moved from Ameliasburgh.

On 1 May 1849, Peter and Hannah Moon sold two parcels of land for 1000 pounds. The first parcel was Lot 18 on the 2nd Concession in Huntingdon and the second was 57 acres of lot 94 on the 1st Concession of Ameliasburgh. This further strengthens the relationship between Peter of Huntingdon and John of Ameliasburgh.

Since writing these notes I have confirmed that they were brothers.

A Peter Moon was christened 28 Sep 1800 in the Reformed Church, West Copake, Columbia, NY. His father was listed as John B. Moon and his mother's name was given as Margreth Morry. (source IGI C50391, 1783-1875 974.739/W1 V26 W book, 0933969 film). Sponsors at Peter Moon's christening were Peter Moon and Lena Jacoby. These may have been his grandparents. (Note: Unlikely to be his grandparents since the eldest child was John and the naming convention seems quite rigorously followed. His sponsors could have been his Uncle and Aunt). However, there is the possibility of a second Petrus Moon and Lena Jacobi in the area who had children Maria 17 Feb 1793, and Petrus 29 Jan 1797.

Since writing these notes I have confirmed that they were brothers. in 2000, at From Peter Jackson, , .4

Hannah Tice [Moon - PeterJackson.FTW]

Buried in Moira Cemetery, Huntingdon Township, County Road #8 between Moira and Hwy 37. Plot 9-3

Information from Louise E. Post (arthur_post@sunshine.net).

I firmly believe that Hannah Tice is one of the missing children of Jacob Tice and Catherine Post.

Unfortunately the names of the children mean nothing and I cannot help you with Lyman or Emily Jane. Possibly they are a Tice connection and that is the problem, I cannot find Jacob Tice/Catherine Post and where they went. There are a lot of Tice's in Ameliasburgh but I cannot prove they are related to Jacob. That missing 1851 Ameliasburgh Census is the biggest problem.

Anyway, here is the information of Hannah Tice's parents:

Jacob Tice and Catherine Post married about 1798, probably in Fredericksburgh Township, Lennox & Addington County. Child: Henry Tice, born 08 July 1802 and baptized in Ameliasburgh Township, Prince Edward County.

Catherine (Catrina) Post, born 04 June 1773 in Tappan, Orange (later Rockland) County, New York, daughter of Frederick Post and Annaetje (Anna Elizabeth) Quackenbush. Sponsors at the baptism were Rynier Quackenbush and Cathrina Waldron, her maternal grandparents.

Catherine Post came to Canada with her parents and siblings about 1795 and the family settled in Fredericksburgh Township, Lennox & Addington County, Ontario

Catherine Post petitioned for land as the daughter of Frederick Post, United Empire Loyalist in 1798. However, an error was made by the individual who wrote out the petition as she is name "Mary" Tice. On 4 March 1840, Catherine again petitions for land, this time stating the error made in the previous petition. Apparently after the original petition, the land had been granted as Lot #17, Concession III, Anwick Township, Northumberland County, but it was registered in the name of "Mary" Tice and Catherine Post Tice could not legally claim it. The petition dated 4 March 1840 states that Catherine is the widow of Jacob Tice and the daughter of Frederick Post and requests that a new grant be properly made up in the correct name. (Note: These Land Petitions were seen in the Ontario Archives by me and notes were made from them. Unfortunately I did not make note of where the petition was written, if it was indicated, so I don't know where she was living when she re-petitioned in 1840).

On the Agricultural Census for Ameliasburgh Township, Prince Edward County, a Jacob Tice is found living on Lot #63-67, Concession I. This could possibly be a son of Jacob Tice and Catherine Post. (Note: Interesting note - Catherine Post's brother, John Post, living on Lot #66, Concession I, Ameliasburgh Township).
