Ross McAfee ROSS'S STORY -
He was 21 years old in June 1942 and working on a farm near Imperial, Sask when he received a registered letter to report for a medical examinationthat would qualify him for a soldier in the Canadian Army.

In Regina on July 2, 1942 he was issued a uniform as a private in theRegina Rifles - 3rd batalion. He took basic training in Calgary, Advanced and Commando training in Victoria, Courtenay, Terrace, Port Alberni & Nanaimo, signal and guard duty at the Air Force Base at Coal Harbour, which completed his Canadian tour.

He then enlisted for active duty and was on the way to Halifax to boardthe Mauritania Troop shop, after 14 days at sea arrived in England inDecember of 1944.

He was posted first at Ghent, Belgium, with active duty at Emmerich and Kliev in Germany, then to Holland. He was at Leer, Germany when the warended and spent the next four months with the occupational troops, then back to England with the Canadian Army Shows.

He sailed back to Canada on the Queen Elizabeth in April 1946, his tourhaving lasted 3 years and 9 months. He has the Canadian Volunteer Service Metal with the overseas bar and lapel pin, The France and GermanyStar, and the War Medal 1939- 1945.

After being discharged he worked for his brother Cliff, in Quinton, as a mechanic and on the fuel delivery truck. Then the opportunity to buy a trucking business came along and he spent the next 18 years as a local truck.After that he worked
as an Elevator Manager for National Grain, which later became Cargill Grain Co. He spent 13 years buying grain in Quinton and Punnichy, then was offered a job as a grain auditor which meant a move to Regina. Seven years later he retired.

ESTHER'S STORY
She grew up on a farm, along with 8 brothers and sisters in Serathdistrict. Attended a one room school, where they had a new teach everyyear. Their drinking water came from a water cooler and they used anoutside toilet. The school board gave them one new ball and bat a year.The only play ground equipment in the yard was a double set of swings anda teeter-totter.
Before marrying Ross she worked in Saskatoon, Quinton and Regina. Rossbought the trucking business and they made their home in Quinton, where Wanda and Ross attended the Catholic school taught by Nuns. They alltook an active part in sports, such as hardball, softball, curling andskating and then in later years took up golfing.

Esther taught Sunday school, was a 4-H leader, took sewing lessons and learned to quilt. Ross coached hockey and baseball for the junior boys and was often called upon to umpire ball games.

They moved to Regina in 1979 and when Ross retired in 1986 he took uphobbies, gardening, wood working, bowling, square dancing and bridge.

They vacationed in Haiwi, Cuba, California, Arizona. They took a bus trip to Maritimes and to Minesota to watch the Toronto Blue Jays playball. They also took numerous motor trips to visit family in BC, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario.[Langstaff Jul 26 01.FTW]
