James Langstaff was born on 11 September 1833, at Elizabethtown Twp., Grenville Co., Ont. (1901 census). He was the son of William Langstaff and Elizabeth Warren.
James Langstaff married Frances Jane Dodge, daughter of Peater Dodge and Holla "Polly" Gochan, on 2 May 1859, at by JP Elijah White, , , USA. From the St. Lawrence Republican, originally St. Lawrence Repub,ican and General Advisor, newspaper, published on Tuesdays Jan 1 1833 to 1857 (mistakeby writer, must go on later), today found on microfilm in Ogdensburg Public Library.
Dodge, Jane married in Ogdensburg May2, 1859 by Elijah White, JP. James Langstaff to Miss Jane Dodge, both of North Augusta, Ont. 3 May 1859.1
James Langstaff was in at Roll # C-1025, Augusta Twp., Grenville Co., dist. 8, page 9, line 45., , Grenville, , on the 1861 census
On the 1861 census James and his wife live alone in Augusta in a one story log house and he is working as a shoemaker.
On the 1871 census (Roll # 10,003, page 78, line 15), there are the following details of James's family in Augusta Twp. Lot 34, Conc. 8, but only on a 0.25 acre lot all of which was improved including gardens and orchard :
1) grew 30 bushels of potatoes on his 0.25 acres;
2) working as a shoemaker, $25 invested capital and $400 floating capital;
3) had been working 4 years in the trade and employed 1 person who was paid $104 in the last year;
4) he had stock of upper and sole leather (4 quintals), value $300;
5) made boots and shoes and did repairs t a value of $500 per year average;
6) as well he killed one pig in the last year for sale or export.
He is listed as being an Adventist while his wife Frances Jane was a Weslyan Methodist.
In the 1881 census James and Frances are listed as 38 and 33 years of age resp. Obviously a mistake. Their religion is now listed as Can. Methodist.. He is still listed as a shoemaker and they have no children.
On the 1901 census (Roll # T-6468, page 9, line 27) he was still a shoemaker living at the same location (lot 34, conc. 8) in Augusta Twp. and had earned $1200 in the past year. His home is a wooden six room house on a 1/4 acre lot with one outbuilding, probably his shop. He had a neice Jennie (C.E.) living with him. His wife was now listed as Jane. His birth is recorded as one year later that that I got from Ruth Doland. One would assume he has the correct year so I have changed it (see birth of his wife ).2

Joseph Langstaff was born on 18 November 1839, at, Grenville, . At Page 31, Bap. 23 December 1839; July 15, 1999. Visited the Anglican Church Archives in Kingston. There I found the baptismal record for Joseph. It gives his birth date as Nov. 17, 1839 not the 1840 Ruth Doland gave. He was baptized on 23 Dec. 1839, so it would seem that there could be no error in the birth date, and 1839 is correct. The record is in Vol. 1 of the Parish Register for Lamb's Pond, Elizabethtown Twp., 1803 - 1852.1 He was the son of William Langstaff and Elizabeth Warren. Joseph Langstaff witnessed the New Tag of William Langstaff on 12 January 1852 at Lot 10,Cons. 9, , Grenville, ; 1851 Census, C-11733, part 2 Elizabethtown, Leeds Co. pages 17 or 161 starting row 3.

July 23, 1999, I found on the 1901 census (Roll # T-6468, page 4, line 24) the record of a Joseph Langstaff with a wife Sarah but the birthday now is given as 26 Nov. 1840. This would agree with the 1840 of Ruth Doland, but the date is different. Both he and his wife are listed as C.E. followers. He was now working for the railway as a labourer and in the past year (1900) he earned $530. He was living in a 6 room wood house with 1 outbuilding in Prescott (200 Prince St.). It would seem that his house was located on 5 town lots. The census was taken April 8, 1901.6
