John Moon [Moon - PeterJackson.FTW]

John Moon's age varies widely from census to census. In the 1861 census his age is given as 27 which means that he was born in 1834. In the 1871 census his age is 36 so his birth year would be 1835. In the 1891 census his age is 55 so his birth year is 1836. In March 1900, when he died, he was supposed to be 68 years old which makes his year of birth 1832. Mary Long's notes give his birth date as Jan 1833 (although 3 February 1832 has been handwritten in. The obituary says he was 67, which would make his year of birth 1833 if he was born in January or February. His tombstone in the Belleville cemetery shows 1833. The family bible gives 1832 with his brother Peter being born 1 April 1833. I've gone with 3 February 1832 as a best guess.

Buried at Belleville Cemetery, Area N, section 7, lot 3, North Path.

John Moon lived in Hastings, Asphodel Township, in 1861. His oldest son's birthplace is supposedly PE Cty so I assume he moved to Hastings about 1857 - 1858. They lived in a one story frame house on 2/3 rds of an acre. He had $800 invested in the property and livestock worth $120 (1 horse, 1 cow and 2 pigs). He had about $100 worth of wood, oak, elm, pine and B wood which I assume is basswood. There was an apprentice, James Houston, 17, and a servant Mary Cralen (sp?), 26, living with them. He produced about $200 worth of carriages and sleighs a year. he is listed in the 1864 directory of Ameliasburgh.

In 1871, John Moon owned lot 25 in Concession 5, in Sidney Township, Hastings County, on which there were two dwelling houses, one (warehouse, store or factory), and one barn or stable in which there were two carriages. The lot was 1 and 1/2 acres of which 1 acre was gardens or orchards. He had 1/2 an acre in potatoes from which he got 50 bushels. He also grew 7 bushels of beets and 3 bushels of apples. He had one horse, 1 milch cow and 3 other cows, 2 swine and 4 bee hives. The family produced 75 pounds of butter a year and 25 pounds of honey.

He was a carriage maker and his business was valued as $100 fixed capital and $50 floating capital. There was one person employed (I assume it was him) at $300 per year. His inventory consisted of assorted woods of about 6000 board feet worth $75.00. He built 5 new carriages worth $600 in a year and undertook repairs of all kinds.

In 1891, John and Clarissa are living with Ella and Clara in Belleville. In the 1894/95 Belleville directory, John is listed as a wagon maker living at "s Coleman 1 n Bridge h Everitt". His business is listed at e s Coleman. In 1899 he is not listed.

John's death has caused considerable confusion. It appears that his son, Malcolm, registered the death in Belleville as occurring 1 March 1900. The other son, Charles, appears to have registered the same death as occurring 2 March 1900 in Sidney Township. Charles also stated that his father was born in Prince Edward County but Malcolm just said Ontario. The Belleville Intelligencer obituary is on Mar 01, 1900 so I have taken this as the correct date and it gives the place of birth as PE County. John's will states that his death was on 01 Mar 1900..

The marriage registration for John's second wedding gives the names of his parents as John and Polly MOON of Ameliasburgh. John's death notice in the Belleville Intelligencer states that he leaves a wife, three sons and three daughters. Since Clarissa died in 1893 this confirms the second marriage.

John's will names Malcolm and Charles as the executors. His will was made 24 February 1900, or one week before he died. He leaves his household furnishings to his "beloved wife" Mary and states that she is to have the use of the house as long as she lives or until she remarries. He makes provision for his grandson, Henry Phillips who is to reside with his wife Mary, until he is 21. His estate is estimated at $575 for real estate and $404 for personal property. The land consists of lot 13 on concession one in Sidney.[Langstaff Jul 26 01.FTW]
