From the 1861 census (Roll # C-1026, page 7, line 14), the family was
living in district 4, Artemesia Twp., Grey County (see CD for map). The
two parents immigrated to Canada in 1848, and both were of the Wesleyan
faith (Wesleyan Methodist in 1871). Strangely the census lists Margaret
as a spinster by occupation and then lists her as being married. They
were living in a one story log home, which was the case for all the other
families on that page of the census. The family consisted of:

in 1861 in 1871

James, born Ireland, age 37, age 50,
Margaret born Ireland, age 39, age 54,
Joseph, born W. Can., age 12, age 21,

Mary, born W. Can., age 5, age 14,

28, line 14) lists William as a farmer and it showed Margaret Jane not
living at home as she was now married to John Warling, and two other
children. Their religion was listed as Weslian Methodist, and all the
children were born in Upper Canada. The family farm is Conc. 2, lot 76,
Artemesia Twp. (next to the Wesleyan Meth. church), consisting of 88
acres with 33 improved and 5 of pasture. On the farm there was one house
and 2 barns or outbuildings and they owned 2 wagons, one plough and a
fanning mill In the year they had :

1) planted 7 acres of spring wheat and harvested 80 bushels;
2) harvested 55 bushels of barley and 60 bushels of oats;
3) harvested 20 bushels of peas;
4) planted 1 acre of potatoes and harvested 100 bushels potatoes, 20
bushels beets, and 1 bushel carrots (other root veg.);
5) put in 9 tons of hay from 9 acres;
6) produced #250 of maple sugar;
7) raised 5 swine and killed 2;

9) one team of horses over 3 years old;
10) raised 6 sheep and harvested 25# wool and made 56
