Kemptville Weekly Advance, August 9, 1917. Killed By Lightning.
The thunder storm which visited Kemptville and vicinity about eleven thirty Wednesday morning, resulted in a fatality, lightning striking and killing Mr. Earl Gaw. Mr. Gaw was working on the section as a member of a spare gang. When the storm came, the party, including Wilbert and Elgin Prosser, Herb. Langstaff, Buzz Banks, and Earl Gaw, took refuge from the rain under a tree near Hay's pit. Gaw was sitting between Langstaff and Prosser, when lightning struck the tree, killing Gaw and seriously injuring Prosser and Langstaff. The four survivors are suffering from shock and are receiving medical attention. The news of the fatality quickly circulated around town, causing anxiety among relatives until the facts were known and grief to the members of the stricken household. Earl Gaw was well known in town and his parents, brother, and sister have the sympathy of the community in their sudden bereavement. on 8 August 1917, at Struck by lightning while working, , .¹
